Player Stories allow designers to step through an App as a potential player and imagine how they would use and react to features. Here are three Player Stories designed for American Users of Questmania.
Stories for players of other Demographics will be developed by OEF as they move forward with development.

Shaun is a 15 year old African-American boy from Boston. He is an only child. His father is a doctor, his mother a housewife. He goes to school at one of Boston’s best schools. He doesn’t really have any favorite subjects at school, but he is an excellent pianist. He has been training since childhood to become a professional pianist, but as he grows older he feels he is not cut out for a lifetime of playing the piano professionally. However he doesn’t dare say that to his parents- he is deathly afraid of his strict father, and he does not want to ever disappoint his kind but overbearing mother. They expect him to be top of the class, learn new symphonies, and compete in college-level sports, and he feels like he can never live up to their expectations. He has a few friends from school and piano lessons, but is not close to any of them. He attends social functions, but he goes mostly to get out of home – he doesn’t hate talking to people, but neither is he very fond of it. He studies only so he can get into a good college that is as far away from his parents. He knows he can get in because his parents have saved up to send him to college. So he studies quite hard, but doesn’t really enjoy any of the subjects any more than the other. He plays video games now and then, but does not find it nearly as much fun as his classmates do. The stress of not having any outlet is taking a toll on him – he often has headaches and falls sick very often, but still goes to school to avoid his mother’s worrying and mollycoddling. He has no idea what he will do in the future – he just wants to make money to be independent from his parents.
Shaun comes home from school and his mother gives him lunch. He tells her that he will eat in his own room so he can start cramming for an upcoming exam, but he just doesn’t want to talk to her or listen to her worry about him. He eats his lunch while surfing Facebook in his room. On facebook, he sees a friend’s post about a really cool trivia game. He likes the look of the game, so he downloads the NGL trivia app from the Google Play Store. Once he installs it, he opens the app.

Lupita is a 14 year old Latina girl from a little town near Boston. She comes from a family of 7 – she is the eldest of 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Her mother works as a house-help in the town. Lupita goes to school, but is thinking of dropping out to help her mother and take care of her young siblings. She doesn’t really like playing sports, but does enjoy going to the mall with her friends. She has a lot of friends and loves talking to new people and getting to know them, so she loves going to parties and plans many of them too (but she is not particularly close to any of her friends; in fact, her best friend is her pet cat Rosie). She doesn’t like being on the forefront or leading any activity. But the exception is when she plans parties with her friends – her friends say she should be a wedding planner, or maybe an interior decorator. But she knows that she would never be able follow that career path – she has to take care of her family first. At school, her favorite subject is science. She loves understanding the way the world works and loves the feeling of knowing something that she didn’t know yesterday. She is also an expert at teaching others scientific concepts, and that makes her very popular in class! But she hates giving exams and the stress that places on her. She just doesn’t have the time to do all the household chores and help her siblings with homework and study. When she is stressed out or feels like her emotions are going crazy, she takes a deep breath and thinks of her hardworking mother.

Lupita comes home from school and cooks lunch for her younger sisters and brothers. She serves them all and eats last, after making sure they have all eaten. She eats her lunch and thinks about doing the day’s homework, but loses interest as soon as she thinks about it. She idly plays with her cat Rosie, and suddenly remembers her teacher mentioning the NGL app when they were studying genetics in class. She downloads the NGL trivia app from the Google Play Store. Once she installs it, she opens the app.

Jim is a 14 year old white boy from a suburb near Boston. He comes from a family of 5 – his father is a manager, his mother a teacher, and two elder brothers (Tim and Kim) who are star football players. He goes to school in Boston. He likes playing basketball casually and FPS video games after school with his friends. Jim has a few good friends but can be shy with strangers. He isn’t fond of going to parties, as he does not feel like he fits in well with his classmates. But if his small group of friends is at a party he would definitely go! He always has a great time hanging out with them. His best friend is Nate, and they often play basketball and play Call of Duty together. School stresses him out a lot – he really wants to go to college but his financial condition is not that great, so his parents desperately want him to get a scholarship. Everyone expects him to get a sports scholarship because his brothers are star athletes; but he only likes to play sports for fun, not competitively. So he is studying hard for an academic scholarship but feels like he is not very good at any particular subject. He likes literature and geography, but dislikes science. He is vaguely interested in an English degree but knows he won’t get a good job in the future in that career path, so he begrudgingly focuses on studying science and math. When he is stressed out he just switches on Netflix or plays Call of Duty – he is afraid of what might happen in the future and doesn’t want to think about it.

Jim comes home from school and heats up his packed lunch. His parents are still at work and his brothers are busy practicing for their football match this weekend. He eats his lunch alone while watching “Game of Thrones”, and once he is done, starts doing the day’s homework. A couple of hours later, looking for a break from homework, he downloads the NGL trivia app from the Google Play Store. Jim’s friend Nate has been playing the NGL trivia app and competing with other players during lunch, so he is curious about the app. Once he installs it, he opens the app.
