Our team was given an objective: to create a story-driven experience that was uniquely AR.
What does this mean? What is AR? What makes a good story? What platform will we be using? These questions were boiling as we first entered our project room. The team, consisting of Nidhi Ramanathan, Wenyu Mao, Chia Chi Chang, and Kristian Tchetchko needed to come together to figure out just what they had gotten ourselves into. The goal at the end of this first week was to have an understanding of purpose and direction. We met with our clients (who are also our instructors, Chris Klug and Ralph Vituccio. Their intent in pitching this project was to demonstrate the storytelling potential of AR in creating experiences that could not be experienced any other way. The main driving force needed to be story, and this was not to become a game.
We arguably had more questions than answers after this first meeting, especially since we as a team did not have much experience with this medium. We set off to brainstorm some clarity and focal points, as well as some questions to think about as we went ahead.
- What is AR?
- What makes an Interaction “great”?
- How can the device be incorporated into the story?
- What makes the guest feel immersed?
- How can we introduce space and real objects into the experience?
- What can we do with the interaction between the real and the virtual?
- And finally, What do we want to accomplish?
With these questions in our mind, we set off to hunt through the internet in search of answers, inspirations, and discovery.
