Week 7 Newsletter (2/23 – 2/27)

Jelly Pirates

Overview

Hello everyone from teams ThunderEgg and Legato! This week was an important one for us as we worked towards one product all together. After monday’s all-in client meeting, we decided to move forward with “Space Jelly Pirates” idea and this week we started on improving the design, further defining the interactions and started implementing base classes.

Progress over the Week:

After deciding on the final idea and talking with the client, the team decided that the most important thing was to find the most intuitive shooting mechanic.

Designers came up with 2 different shooting mechanics to be tested to decide which one is better.

  • Swipe to shoot : The player swipe on the mobile one and the cannons shoot in the same direction.
  • Drag and shoot : Player drag his hand on the phone screen and sees the canon rotate according to the movement of his finger. When released the canon is shot.

Designers also worked on introducing a “different role” mechanic in the game and added a fourth player that would be in charge of the steering of the wheel.

Programmers, decided on their major system owners and set some standards moving forward to be able to work together and share the code base. They also implemented the first “swipe to shoot mechanic” and the 4th player interaction. Friday was a milestone for them, as they merged all the separate systems into the main scene and delivered a simple level.

Artists, worked with designers all week creating characters and the ship for the Space Jelly Pirates and tweaking assets with the feedback they got.

Producers, worked with the whole team to make sure they have a productive pipeline, and all the tasks for the weekly sprints are completed in time.

Next Steps:

The team has been working really hard to make up for the time that was spent for prototyping. Moving forward team wants to conduct a playtest, to figure out the most intuitive shooting mechanic. And keep iterating on the idea.
