Week 14 Newsletter (04/20 – 04/25)

w14-4

Overview

Soft Opening is here! Team Legato presented our game to faculty members on Monday in Pittsburgh while them Thunder Egg showcase their game in the Atrium at EA to employees and their families. Once the softs were over, we gathered all the feedback and kept working on improving our game. We also had a chance to squeeze in another playtest on Wednesday.

Progress over the Week:

In the playtest last Saturday, we had about 20 people play our game during spring carnival at CMU West. We still had several bugs and missing features from the experience by then. As a result, players struggled to perform successfully; however, they reported having fun trying. But it gave us the opportunity to make necessary tweaks that would improve the experience for the softs around the corner.

We got some really good feedback from both softs and the playtest following it. During softs here at EA, we watched players yelling at each other and work together to take down the enemies. They liked the color coded enemies, especially the giant triple colored burgers caused lots of calling out to teammates. The group events were creating lots of excitement and everyone understood what they were supposed to do. They said that the controllers were easy to understand but suggested some tweaks to make more responsive. We also realized that the healing was a bit too difficult as it requested a really precise positioning that we plan to address. We also had our first take at boss level implemented and a few teams actually made it to the boss. They seemed to enjoy it but it was a bit too easy for a boss level, which is something we plan to adjust in the coming week.

Right after our softs on Tuesday, we made some little tweaks for our playtest on Wednesday and our observations indicated a very positive reception. In fact, we were unable to get two of the groups to stop playing in time to answer our follow-up questionnaire. Though most of the participants of these playtests fall outside of our target audience, we still view their response as a positive indication of the fun we want our game to offer.

Next Steps:

As we have only 1 week away from the finals, the team will be focusing heavily on making sure all the pieces we have work well together, all the bugs are fixed and make sure to handle all the connections in between sessions.
