The Work This Week

Halves!

Week 8 was Team HyperPickle’s halves presentation! We delivered our presentation in the zoom meeting on Wednesday, feel free to check out the slides and video:

Besides halves presentation (which surely ate lots of time), the team was also on their track working on the game, please check below our updates role by role.

Art

After discussions with our instructors, our artist pivoted a bit their art style in a way that is richer in detail and fits the worldbuilding. This is our pipeline now:

2D concept -> 3D modelling -> reviewing -> rigging -> animating -> polishing

Now JD and Evelyn are working hard together to make new planets and inhabitants!

Design

Without many new design posts and mockups, week 8 was de facto a big week for design. After the halves presentation, we reflected on our design so far from a contestant’s standpoint, and realized that what they really want out of our game: it’s really not about learning much cybersecurity knowledge or experience a story that’s totally unlinked to what they will expect. The game should deliver a fulfilling experience where they are put into some challenging situations and are able to solve those, that they feel they are “hacking” something. With that notion in mind, we began looking at some cybersecurity areas recommended by our client, and came up with quite a few new game mechanics.

Programming

On the tech side, the team has reached a milestone where we were able to implement inventory into current game systems, and we also connected the server and client end with a working data structure.

Client Meeting

We didn’t have our regular zoom client meeting on Friday since that’s the ETC mid-semester break day. We did keep updating and getting feedback from our client via Discord chats, who gave some valuable suggestions on possible cybersecurity concepts that we could implement in our game.

The Plan for Next Week

Next week, we are keeping our schedule on time and working on various game systems including dialogue, mining, and upgrading. The team will be working closely with each other to keep us updated on details and make sure we will have a robust game by the playtesting week!
