Layout Artist at Pixar Animation Studios
Class of 2020
Describe what you currently do, and tell us the best thing about it.
I am currently a Layout Artist at Pixar Animation Studios. A layout artist designs the visual structure of a scene by selecting camera angles, composing shots, and positioning characters to align with the storyboard and bring the story to life. The thing I enjoy the most about this role is that every film is unique, so each one has its own challenges and visual style.
What led you to the ETC?
I found my way to the ETC because when I was finishing up college, I realized I wanted to learn more about animation and film as well as games. The ETC introduced me to all of those things and helped me figure out exactly what I wanted to do within the industry.
What’s your favorite ETC memory?
My favorite ETC memory was when I worked on the final round of BVW. It was a great moment for me because I found a group that ultimately became close friends. This was also the time when I figured out what I wanted to do in life, because this project made me realize I wanted to work in film and be a layout artist.
How did ETC prepare you for your career, and what impact has it had on your life?
The ETC teaches you how to work in groups with all sorts of people, and I think that was the best thing that could have prepared me for my current career. We’re always working in large groups, and it’s important to be familiar with those dynamics before entering your career. Additionally, I learned so much about animation and games through my time at the ETC.
What advice would you give current students?
That it’s okay to start the program not knowing exactly what you want to do when you finish. I think a lot of people start that way and it can be daunting, but your time in the program will help you figure out what you like and what you want to do in the future.
Describe the ETC in one word.
Transformative.
What are you working on now that excites you?
I can’t talk about it yet!
