Project Website

ACT VI is a project exploring the intersection between AI and theater. We seek to consider the possible applications of AI in different roles and elements on theater, and discover through experimentation and iteration where AI belongs in theater, or if it even belongs at all.

To this end, we are creating a live theatrical play with room for improv, featuring one human actor and one character controlled by AI (represented by an object). Our current challenge is trying to train AI to become an improv actor through a carefully crafted narrative that requires AI to take on a curated personality and act as the character we designed for it. We are currently using OpenAI to receive voice input from the human actor and have the AI respond accordingly, following the rules of improv and theater.

While this is our current exploration, we are also constantly evaluating how our current direction aligns with our original goals for the project. We continue to look at the question of where AI fits in theater (perhaps as a tool instead of an actor?), the different possible places it could benefit actors in, and the purpose behind what we are making.
